Red Cross Instructor Training

The Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross offers a number of Red Cross Instructor Courses. These are the courses needed in order to become a Red Cross Health & Safety Instructor, in specific areas of instruction.

If you are not currently an American Red Cross Health & Safety Instructor, you will first need to complete our "Fundamentals of Instructor Training" course.

The purpose of this course is to prepare candidates with the ability to understand their role in training the community and to comprehend the responsibility of teaching people specific Red Cross health & safety courses, learning the Red Cross Mission as well as policies and procedures of the health & safety department.

UPGRADE

                                        TO CPR/AED FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUER INSTRUCTOR

Cost: $50.00

To also gain an instructor certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, you must complete additional pre-course skills (listed on the next page), an additional practice teach back, and additional written tests.  This will be conducted during the Lay Responder FA and CPR/AED Instructor Course. 

If you are already a Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor, please contact the office for other times/dates to upgrade to CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. 

 

 

 

LAY RESPONDER FIRST AID & CPR/AED INSTRUCTOR PREREQUISITES

 

  • Be at least 16 years of age by completion of course.
  • Successfully complete the pre-course session.
  • Possess an American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (F.I.T.) Certificate issued in the last 12 months or a current Health & Safety instructor authorization.
  • Please note that the Instructor course is not designed to teach you the required basic level knowledge or skills.  This course is dedicated to developing the skills you will need to instruct and plan courses in the American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Program. 
  • To be an effective First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, you must become familiar with the student materials.  You will have reading assignments from the materials to prepare you for each session.  You will also be given practice teaching assignments, which give you the experience in presenting information to course participants, conducting classes and evaluating skills.  Student materials are included with the cost of the course.
 

 

LAY RESPONDER FIRST AID & CPR/AED INSTRUCTOR PRE-COURSE SESSION

 

  • The Pre-course Session includes a written test and a skills testing session.  If you do not score 80% or better on the written test, you will not be permitted to continue in the course.  There is only one attempt.  If you feel you are not sure, pick-up the textbook beforehand and review the skills and test material or attend a First Aid & CPR class.

 

 

The Pre-course Skills test consists of the following skills:

  • Checking a Conscious Adult, Child and Infant
  • Checking an Unconscious Adult, Child, and Infant
  • Conscious Chocking - Adult, Child, and Infant
  • Rescue Breathing - Child and Infant
  • CPR - Adult, Child and Infant
  • Unconscious Choking - Adult, Child and Infant
  • Using an AED - Adult and Child
  • Controlling External Bleeding
  • Applying a Splint

 

 

OPTIONAL:

Additional Pre-course Skills for

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor Upgrade

  • Two-Rescuer CPR
  • Resuscitation Mask
  • Bag-Valve Mask (Two Rescuers)
  • Participants must bring their own pocket mask or purchase one at the class for $10.00

 

1.       All registrations are on a first come, first served basis.  You may pay with a check, money order, cash, or Credit Card. 

 

BY MAIL

Complete the Registration Form and Information Sheet at the end of the packet and mail it to the address listed at the bottom of the Registration Form.  You may pay by mail with a check, money order, or credit card.  Please fill in the name and expiration date that appear on your credit card.

 

BY PHONE

Registration can be accepted by phone if it is charged to Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.  Please have your credit card ready when you call.  Call (908) 756-6414.

 

BY FAX

Registration can be accepted by fax using a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.  Fax the registration form complete with credit card information to (908) 756-7190 Attn: Health & Safety.

 

IN PERSON

Registration and payment can be brought to our Plainfield Office Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm.

 

Walk-in registrations are NOT accepted on the day of the class.  

 

2.      Confirmations of enrollment are not mailed.  If you do not hear from the American Red Cross, attend the course as scheduled.  You will be notified by phone at least two business days prior to the start of the class if the class is canceled or postponed by the chapter.

 

3.      COURSE TRANSFERS AND REFUNDS

 

We will issue you a full refund if:

 

¨       The course is cancelled by the chapter

¨       You cancel your registration a minimum of 3 business days before the class date.

¨       The course is filled at the time your registration is received.

 

We will issue you a refund, minus a $20 administrative fee ($10 fee for FIT Course) if:

¨       You cancel your registration less than 3 business days before the class date.

 

If you fail the pre-course tests of any course, you will be entitled to a 50% refund.

 

If you fail to attend the course or arrive at the course late, your fee is considered a donation to the American Red Cross and will not be refunded. 

 

If you have an illness or emergency, please notify the Health & Safety Office as soon as possible by calling (908) 756-6414.  If you call in the 24 hours before a course and our office is closed, leave a message with the After Hours Answering Service.
