Disaster Classes offered by the Tri-County Red Cross

DISASTER SHELTER VOLUNTEER TRAINING PROGRAM

In 2009 the Tri-County Chapter of the American Red Cross won a grant through the Union County Office of Emergency Management to recruit and train more than 500 Union County disaster relief volunteers to be ready in the case of a significant incident in our area. The Tri-County Red Cross will be working with two other chapters serving Union County, the Westfield Mountainside and Colonial Crossroads chapters.

The chapters will cooperatively hold training classes in 2010 throughout Union County. Many, if not most of these classes will be open to the public, but houses or worship, businesses and organizations can hold closed classes to train their own employees or members.

Individuals 18 years and older, throughout the greater Union County area are invited to attend any of the disaster relief classes. All Red Cross disaster training will be provided free of cost to the students.

The training consists of three three-hour workshops, that must be taken in sequence, starting with

Class 1: Fulfilling our Mission / Mass Care Overview Workshop,
Class 2: Shelter Operations, and
Class 3: Shelter Simulation.

Once trained, volunteers will be called in times of disaster to provide relief and support in Disaster Shelters locally, or the volunteers may elect to be placed on a National Database for deployment to areas around the country as they are able.
