Yesterday Red Cross volunteer Chuck Sweetman responded to a home fire in North Plainfield after we were called by the North Plainfield Fire Department. There were two injuries to the family that lived in the home, and Chuck provided food and clothing to others in the family. The family called later in the weekend, and was placed in a local hotel for three nights as the home was repaired.
Every winter the Red Cross responds to 40-50 home fires to assist families who are displaced, and provides shelter, food and clothing at a cost of around $75,000. The funds are provided by donations from local individuals, organizations and businesses.
It is the combination of volunteers like Chuck Sweetman and donors from throughout our service area that ensures no family goes without a bed, roof, food and clothing during a disaster or emergency.
