Yesterday afternoon the electrical system inside Hugo and Annie Fernandez's son's bedroom wall sparked and caught fire, forcing the evacuation of the family of eight. The fire department determined that the home was unlivable while the electrical system was compromised, and called the Tri-County Red Cross to support the family.
Hugo and Annie have six kids, including two autistic children and an 18 month old daughter. Red Cross Emergency Services director responded to the call, and placed the entire family in a hotel and provided food and clothing to tide them over while the landlord repairs the damage.
Fortunately no one was injured, and no medical support was needed.
Every winter, from November to March, the Tri-County Red Cross spends around $75,000 to provide disaster prevention and relief to residents of Union, Somerset and Middlesex counties who are displaced from their homes by fire.
You can help us provide these services by making a small donation. You can make a one-time tax-deductible gift, or become a Sustaining Hero by signing up to give every month with a debit or credit card. Just $10 a month provides a hotel room for a family of three after a home fire or flood.
