The Tri-County Red Cross is celebrating Red Cross Month this March with free seminars, Mayoral proclamations and fundraising at local businesses. Red Cross Month will see a series of free disaster preparedness seminars, blood drives and fundraisers at local businesses.
More than 50 businesses in the community are participating by selling Red Cross Squares to their customers for a $1 donation to the Red Cross from March 1 to March 31. Donors can then write their names on the squares and they will be put on the wall to show the strong support for local Red Cross disaster relief.
"In this tough economy it's hard for families and businesses to make the large donations of the past, so we came up with a different strategy to fund local disaster relief," said Nathan Rudy, the Tri-County Red Cross Executive Director. "By working together and each contributing just a small amount we can be there for the tens of thousands of people helped by the Red Cross in Union, Somerset and Middlesex counties every year."
Businesses and community organizations interested in selling Red Cross Squares to their customers and members can call Development Officer Corinna Krauskopf at (908) 756-6414 x20 to enroll. The more businesses that participate, the more money raised to support local victims of home fires, heart attacks and other emergencies.
Mayors in all 22 municipalities served by the Tri-County Red Cross in Union, Somerset and Middlesex counties are issuing proclamations certifying March as Red Cross month. The proclamations reflect that the Tri-County Red Cross responds to local disasters, trains residents in CPR and first aid, and is a part of disaster plans for each community.
"We are proud that the Mayors in all the towns served by the Tri-County Red Cross recognize the valuable role our donors and volunteers serve in their communities," said Rudy. "The partnership between local government, businesses and Red Cross volunteers means no one who is displaced from their home due to a local disaster goes without shelter, food and clothing for their family."
Through the month of March the chapter will also be presenting Be Red Cross Ready seminars throughout the area. Be Red Cross Ready prepares individuals, families and businesses for disasters by teaching them to make a kit, be prepared and be informed. The seminars are only one hour long, and can be scheduled by contacting Emergency Services Director Michael Prasad at (908) 756-6414 x15.
