expectation that there will be a need to deploy these resources, but the
expectations of huge crowds in the millions makes pre-planning prudent. The
week of the inauguration will see millions of Americans gathering for many
celebrations. In this and all cases of
large public "official" gatherings it is normal practice for the
American Red Cross to be on some level of stand by in order to support an
operation if there is one.
The Tri-County Red Cross
joined all other Red Cross chapters within a 250 mile radius Washington, D.C.
put on stand-by alert last week, asked to be able to mobilize within a few
hours notice to deploy to Maryland and Virginia to staff evacuation shelters,
if necessary.

Disaster Volunteers respond
to more than 65 local disasters a year - such as house fires and floods - in
the Tri-County Red Cross area to assist neighbors and other residents who are
displaced from their homes with shelter, food and clothing. Disaster Volunteers are also dispatched to
national emergencies when needed, including this summer's hurricanes, last
week's airplane crash in the

of Red Cross deployment down the street or across the country are handled by
our organization.
